ASAP applied for and received a federal Drug Free Communities Grant with Rural America Initiatives partnering as the fiscal agent. This grant award was $125,000 a year for five years. With this grant ASAP was able to build, strengthen and expand its prevention efforts in the community with the following: outstanding prevention speakers, trainings for youth and adults, forums and focus groups, school surveys, and youth leadership events as well as other community prevention related efforts. ASAP received this grant for another 5 years for a total of 10 years, in addition become a recipient of a Sober Truth on Preventing Underage Drinking Grant (STOP) to enhance prevention efforts designed to reduce underage alcohol use.
With these funds ASAP was able to introduce a school-based prevention pilot program which paid for a prevention professional to work within the Rapid City Area Schools. From this pilot program, an ASAP member created the Lifeways, Inc. School Based Prevention program which began in 2003. For more information about Lifeways please visit www.Lifeways.us.
