ASAP began and supported local Youth to Youth Leadership groups in area high schools in 1999. Youth to Youth was founded in 1982 in Columbus, Ohio, as a community-based drug prevention and youth leadership program focusing primarily on middle school and high school students. The goal of its many projects is harnessing the powerful influence of peer pressure – making it a positive force that encourages young people to live free of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. Locally, ASAP sponsored and supported, along with support from the South Dakota National Guard and other community organizations, annual Youth to Youth Leadership conferences. In 2012 the final and 12th annual high school conference was held. A Middle School Youth to Youth program began in 2008 and yearly Youth to Youth Middle School Leadership Conferences were held until the spring of 2012. Youth to Youth was a very successful program for local youth with over 150-250 teens attending these conferences each year. The Rapid City schools along with other schools in the Black Hills area had active Youth to Youth Leadership groups in their schools.
