Red Ribbon

Rapid City and the surrounding areas participate each year in the National Red Ribbon Campaign, with events that include a parade down Main Street in Rapid City, with youth proudly wearing and promoting alcohol-and-drug-free messages, a Rally at Halley Park, tying of the Red Ribbon on the neck of the dinosaur at Dinosaur Park, Billboard and Radio PSA contests, and much more.

Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention program reaching millions of Americans during the last week of October every year. Rapid City's events usually start in the middle of October. By wearing red ribbons and participating in community anti-drug events, young people pledge to live a drug-free life and pay tribute to DEA Special Agent Enriqué “Kiki” Camarena, who was kidnapped, brutally tortured, and murdered by Mexican drug traffickers in 1985.

2016 Activities:

October 26 - 4:00 pm - Tying of Red Ribbon on the dinosaur's neck at Dinosaur Park. The huge ribbon is made and signed by students from various schools to show their commitment to being drug free.

October 27 - 3:30 pm - Billboard Contest winner and billboard unveiling by Family Thrift Center Express. This contest is sponsored by Family Thrift Center, Lamar Outdoor Advertising and ASAP. K-5 students submit their billboard drawings by entering at any Family Thrift Center location or through their schools. The winner will be invited to the unveiling, along with their classroom.

October 28 - Morning - Judging for the Red Ribbon Spirit Award will begin in the morning. The Noon Optimists and Red Ribbon Committee members will come to schools that sign up to participate in this event. Noon Optimists will present the winning school their Spirit Award at a future School Board meeting.

2016 Red Ribbon Promotions - Thanks to the support of our local business sponsors, local youth can qualify for several discounts and free items throughout the week, just by wearing their Red Ribbon to demonstrate their commitment to be drug free. These local businesses, many of which have partnered with ASAP for a number of years, are proud to support our local youth and give them incentives to remain drug free during Red Ribbon Week and all year round!  Download the flyer to view current Red Ribbon promotions offered by local businesses.

Parade - Due to reductions in funding, the Red Ribbon Parade will not be included in Red Ribbon Week activities this year.

To ensure that these community activities continue, please consider becoming a business sponsor, volunteering to assist in planning and coordinating events, and/or donating to ASAP so our long-standing Red Ribbon Celebration can continue for the youth in our community.
